The free tier problem
Most AI tool "free tiers" are demos. They give you enough to see the interface, generate a few outputs, and hit a paywall. The tools below are different — their free tiers are genuinely functional for ongoing marketing work, not just trials.
The distinction: can you actually build a workflow around the free tier, or does every useful feature require upgrading? We only included tools that pass the first test.
AI Writing — Claude
The strongest free AI writing tool available. Claude's free tier handles long-form articles, content briefs, social post batches, email sequences, and SEO metadata without any meaningful restrictions on output quality or length. The free tier is not a gimped version of the paid product — it's the same model with usage limits.
What you can do free: Full article drafts, brand voice matching, research briefs, social repurposing, email writing, meta description generation.
Limitation: Usage limits apply after sustained heavy use. For a typical content marketing workflow (2-3 articles per week), the free tier is sufficient.
SEO — Ahrefs Webmaster Tools + Google Search Console
Free for your own site, permanently. Keyword rankings, backlink data, site health monitoring, and broken link detection — all available without a subscription. The free tier doesn't include competitor research, but for monitoring and optimising your own site, it's complete.
What you can do free: Track your own keyword rankings, monitor backlinks, audit site health, identify crawl errors.
The most important SEO tool available, and it's completely free. Real traffic data, query performance, indexing status, and Core Web Vitals — directly from Google. No third-party data approximation. This is the ground truth for your site's search performance.
What you can do free: Everything. There is no paid version of Search Console.
Newsletter — Beehiiv
The most generous free tier in the newsletter space. Beehiiv's free plan includes unlimited sends to up to 2,500 subscribers, open rate and click analytics, a custom publication URL, and a web archive of all issues. No credit card required to start.
What you can do free: Send unlimited newsletters to 2,500 subscribers, access analytics, embed signup forms, build a web archive.
Limitation: Advanced automation and monetisation features require a paid plan. For launch and early growth, the free tier is complete.
Social Scheduling — Buffer
Buffer's free plan covers three social media channels with 10 queued posts per channel. For a solo brand running LinkedIn, X, and Instagram, that's the full stack. The best time to post suggestions and basic analytics are included. Combine with Claude for content and you have a complete free social media system.
What you can do free: Schedule to 3 channels, queue 10 posts per channel, access basic analytics.
Analytics — Google Analytics 4
Completely free, no traffic limits. GA4 tracks sessions, traffic sources, page performance, user behaviour, and conversion events. The interface has a learning curve, but the data is complete. Pair with Claude for monthly interpretation reports and you have an analytics setup that rivals paid tools.
What you can do free: Everything. GA4 is fully free with no meaningful limitations for most marketing use cases.
Visuals — Canva Free
Canva's free tier covers blog header images, social media graphics, and basic brand templates. The template library is extensive. For a content-first brand that needs consistent visual assets without a designer, the free tier handles everything needed at launch.
